Application of up to 1-2 ul of prepared sample allows the generation of a mass spectrum fingerprint from the sample. For samples with only one component (one protein), this can be used to identify the component by comparing the mass fingerprint against the theoretical fingerprint of possible components. For complex samples, the mass fingerprint can be used as an indication of overall composition.
